Before my hunting season started I have asked our Facebook followers which rifle I should use to fill my cow elk tag. More people advised me to use 6.5-284 Norma. I thought I would use this rifle, but luckily for me Eric agreed to pack 7 SAUM as well.
I finally made up my mind on which rifle to use 10 minutes before the shot! I chose to shoot 7 SAUM for following reasons:
– The elk was on the edge of being almost too far for my comfort and ability to shoot the lighter rifle in 6.5-284 Norma in gusting winds
– I wanted to shoot suppressed so I would not mess up other hunters’ opportunities to succeed since there were only few days left in the season
– I wanted to shoot heavier rifle to reduce recoil, so I could follow the shot through the scope. It was my longest shot ever on a live target, I wanted to see it, and I did!!
It was an awesome one shot hunt! We spotted four cow elk on the bottom of the hill at 1150 yards. We walked a little closer to them and shortened the distance between us to almost 900 yards. 900 yards is an ethical and comfortable distance when shooting heavier bullet from a proven accurate extended long range custom rifle. With Eric by my side as my spotter, his experience and ability to dope the wind and adjust the scope, I had all the confidence in the world that my shot will be successful!
I could not be any happier with my rifle choice! 7 SAUM performed flawlessly. It is precisely built using the most accurate rifle building techniques, utilizing the best components, and topped off with a great optic.
It was a fun hunting experience for the whole family!
